Peak District 2002At Easter 2002 me, Abbie, Jon, Rachel (Abbie's sister), Dave(J), Geoff, Gill, James, Jenny and Nim went up to Edale for a long weekend hiking around. It was pretty chilly, but that was ideal for hiking, and the weather was otherwise fabulous. We had a great time, but since we didn't have any days to work up to hiking it was a bit hard on some of us!

This was our base of operations for the weekend, a great youth hostel near
Edale. Strangely it wasn't rated very highly in their guide - I think people
are just getting too fussy these days!
This was Dave after a 10-minute climb to the top of the hill above the Hostel,
just after we arrived. Ah.. So he's going to be able to cope with a day's
hiking then? (He did, of course :)
We headed up this stream to get to the top of Kinder Scout, the peak we
climbed on the first day. The trees were a scarce enough commodity once we
got onto the windy summit!
Geoff decided he was going to get ahead before the hills started - fortunately
he decided to rest before he got completely out of sight.
This is the same stream as earlier, following the route we took up to the
summit. It looks pretty gentle here...
.. But as you can see from the features along the way, it started to get
steeper fairly rapidly...
.. Until it became an entertaining little scramble. It was tiring, but good
fun - though nothing quite prepared us for the blasting wind at the top!
We had a hard time getting lost at the summit, someone had thoughtfully
put a line of paving stones marking the route. Quite how they got them up
there in the first place, I'd rather not consider...
We hung around here for a bit huddling against the wind - but we hadn't had
the worst of it yet!
The gale lessened a bit as we headed into another valley, and it really was
a gorgeous day.
