Red Tarn

A somewhat better perspective to admire Red Tarn. And yes I am fairly amazed that the following pictures are vaguely focused - the exposure was short, but it really was very windy up there.

The Away Team

Well, OK, only Dave really looks like a Commando in this shot, but I like the way there's the A-team (Gill and Dave), the B-team (inanely waving Geoff and Jenny) and the haven't-decided-yet-team (Abbie, of course). One thing that doesn't come across in this shot is the howling gale pinning everyone to the edge. Good job, really - Swirrel edge is preeetty steep down to the right! It was at this point that Jenny and Geoff decided to head back, since Geoff's vertigo was kicking in. To be honest, I really don't blame it :)

Swirrel Edge

See what I mean? Believe me, it looks ten times worse when you're on it. Out of shot below the hillside in the foreground is the route we took up - somewhat unconventionally we decided that climbing up a virtually sheer rocky slope was the way to go. Whoever was leading must have been mad - oh wait, that was me.. Well, anyway, it was good fun. It was amusing how I was quiet due to concentrating on finding a route up, James was quiet due to finding his footing, Nim and Dave were quietly apprehensive about falling and breaking their necks - and Gill and Abbie were merrily chatting away about how much fun it was climbing up craggy slopes. Yes, this is the same Abbie who hides her face during Star Wars. Funny old world, really.

The Terrible Trio

I just like the expressions on this shot. It must be said in Abbie's defence that's her gloves in her fleece pocket (as opposed to her having consumed 25 pints of beer the night before, or the like). I do like the pirate impression, though...

We Did It!

Proof that we did end up at the summit of Helvellyn (as if the residual wind-burn wasn't proof enough...).

View Off Striding Edge

OK - so perhaps we won't be falling down there, then. Again, this photo doesn't really do justice to the steepness of the slope.

Striding Edge

Gill and James looking very relaxed(!) on Striding Edge. This gives you a better idea of what it's like - it was about this time that the rain started coming in, and the fog started chasing us along, which is why there aren't any more pictures for awhile. We even met some people heading up onto it while we were coming down, despite the fog that was rolling in after us... Er - guys? Do you really think it's wise to walk along a 2-foot-wide path over a sheer drop when you can't see 10 feet in front of you? Oh well, I'm sure they were OK really... I hope...

The Journey Back

We made it down again in one piece, though, and it had even nearly stopped raining by then. My face was still doing beetroot impressions at this stage, however.

Rocky Little Valley

Ahh, how nice.

The View Back

You can see a little bit of the cloud that was covering the peaks as we looked back here - it was quite a bit worse on Helvellyn itself.
