Lake District 2001

Oh dear, there goes Nim again - he's incorrigable. I'm surprised he didn't
suffer any broken limbs from this little encounter, actually... Jenny: you're
slipping! ;)
On the third day we bravely decided to tackle Helvellyn, around the standard
Swirrel then Striding Edges route. Geoff made a good start, as you can see -
maybe there's something in all those swiss rolls after all (other than more
chemicals than you'd find in a science lab, of course).
Generously, he decided to wait for us to catch up for a bit. Or did he say
he was admiring the view? Anyway, it definitely wasn't because he
was tired - I know, because he said so.
Nice meandering little mountain stream this one, keeping us company as we
hiked up the first little valley on the way. I've got a bit of a soft spot
for pictures of rocky mountain streams...
... See?
There was some sort of old mine here, and you can still see a few remnants
around the stream as it cuts its way down from the fells above.
We made fairly good progress at first - this might have had something to do
with the virtually flat terrain, as you can see.
But maybe he's flagging? Or perhaps he just enjoys walking like that... By the
way, the peak in the background isn't actually Helvellyn - we followed the
path round to the left some way ahead, and Helvellyn appears later...
This is where we started gaining alititude a little more quickly - so we
decided we'd have a little rest first. As you can see, Geoff and Jenny
are already dropping off...
You can see the summit of Helvellyn in the background, here. In the foreground
(behind those scruffy vagabonds, whoever they are) is Red Tarn, a small
corrie lake which lies between Striding Edge (off shot to the left here) and
Swirrel Edge (off shot to the right here).
